Map Key

The Map Key control(Key) is used to show the layers presented in the map, and to allow some control of what is displayed. As map views or themes are changed by workflow steps or by use of the Map Theme control, the Key will show the current symbology for each layer.

Basic Use

There are two basic functions: to layer visibility, and to expand or collapse group layers in more complex data models.

  1. click any unchecked checkbox (check) to show the layer.
  2. click any checked checkbox (uncheck) to hide the layer.
  3. click any node to collapse a part of the tree.
  4. click any node to expand a part of the tree.

Note: The Key does not show all cartographic aspects of the layers. For example, in PlanTest views we use complex dynamic labeling to show text next to points and control that describes important properties. This is much easier to understand than complex shape and color symbolism. Layer legends do not describe such labeling.

Details

The Key is a hierarchical tree showing the relationships between data layers. Each leaf is a layer and has a legend key, which shows the current view's symbolic representation for that layer.

The PlanTest workflow controls the cartographic symbolization. Each custom view associated with a workflow step is applied when the step is selected or executed, and the Key will change to show the new legend of the new view. You can change the visibility of layer by clicking the checkbox preceding the layer name in the TOC tree. You can also expand or collapse the tree by clicking on the node marks (+) or (-).

Our Preference: For the fabric itself, we almost never need to use the Key. This is partly because the dynamic presentation from workflows and views does the work for us. A step's views are specifically designed to only show what you need to see. We place more emphasis on labeling than color and shape symbolism. The Fabric controls is much more useful to explore the fabric properties.
