Map Tools

Map Measure

The Measure tool lets you measure lines and areas on the map. You can use this tool to draw a line or polygon on the map and get its length or area, or you can click directly on a feature and get measurement information.

Basic Use

  1. click the Measure tool Measure button on the Tools toolbar.
  2. The Measure dialog box displays instructions.
  3. click the Line button or the Area button.
  4. Sketch the desired shape on the map.
  5. Double-click when you want to end the line or polygon.
  6. The measurements are displayed on the Measure dialog box.

We use this tool only when a Cadastral Tool cannot be applied. If you want a rough area or distance measure not supplied by PlanTest analytic tests or the Cadastral Tools, it can be useful.

Warning! This tool has limited use for cadastre. All measurements are calculated on rough sketches, or the GIS property of the feature you select. THEY ARE NOT SURVEY GRADE CALCULATIONS! Measures between cadastral survey features will depend on the quality of the fabric. If you have not adjusted the fabric using LSA, they could be very rough estimates.
